
Diesel Particulate Filter Technology (DPF):
DPF is among the many methods developed to cut down on air pollution and improve the environmental condition on the Earth which has a monopoly of the auto market. Several countries have passed laws in recent decades that have made use of DPF a requirement in the majority of diesel-powered vehicles across the globe. (The usage of DPF for vehicles on roads is as old as 1985, but for non-road vehicles, the requirement was several years before that.)
The efficacy offered by the DPF system is based on its performance. DPF system is determined by its capability to remove particle matter (soot). Particulate matter that results from the incompletion of combustion of fuel in the engine could be a source of contamination for the air. However, the DPF system can prevent this contamination. DPF filter can absorb and store soot particles. Furthermore, ECU should be required when the amount of soot in the filter is huge. The ECU then burns the soot in the filter by increasing the temperature of the exhaust.
However, the potential problem with the DPF system is visible while your vehicle has been in the middle of traffic. The engine is running at low RPM.
The reasons behind DPF Failure:
- DPF pressure sensor failure
- Performance tuning that isn’t optimal
- High mileage vehicles
- oil moves from the turbo seals, or the turbo seals, and then into the exhaust housing.
- Incorrect fuel injectors may send too much fuel to the mix of air and fuel.
- EGR valve problems
In these instances, a lot of particles can accumulate and block emission gas from the engine. Naturally, this happens in ECUs. So, if you’re an owner of the car, you can take out the DPF filter while driving through intercity areas and highways (when the engine is running at a higher RPM. The method for emptying the filter is based on the car’s model and its ECU. If your DPF cannot be reused (requiring frequent replacement) It’s best to wash it out after 3000 miles (or approximately 6 months) if you’ll have blocked DPF. Regeneration should however be carried out every 5,000 km and is typically handled through sensors after having checked the pressure difference. Regeneration can be conducted in three distinct ways:
1.-in the first form which is also known as passive. The basic idea is the fact that there is getting soot from the filter built up, and is then released after a specific distance with a significant engine load and RMP and the filter reaching a suitable temperature. This kind of regeneration is usually used for non-traffic vehicles.
2.–The second kind of regeneration is called active regeneration. In this case, there is a problem with the DPF is not at the temperature that is needed to let go of the soot this results in an increase in pressure within the DPF. In this scenario, the ECU raises the temperature and aids in the process of regeneration by injecting fuel.
3.-The third kind of regeneration which is also known by the name manual is carried out during periodic service at repair facilities. This process is based upon the instruction sent by the ECU by the car scanner to raise the temperature and melt any soot.

- Ceramic (Ceramic Fiber Filter)
- Silicon Carbide (Silicon Carbide Wall Flow Filter)
The three models are the most widely used DPF models. Apart from the price difference, The three models are mostly different in the melting temperature as well as the dimensions of the duct. These variations ultimately directly impact how the end filter is created.
While, aside from the three models of filters there are other filters available, such as flows-through fiber filtering, as well as paper filters are also available Cordierite filter has become the most popular filter model.
