Sunglasses have become a standard part of everyday eyewear, it’s difficult to imagine a future without them. But when were sunglasses invented, and who invented them?
Ancient forms of sunglasses have been discovered as far back to the early Inuit period. Inuit people are believed to have emerged from western Alaska and Canada during the 1000 common (CE) era. (CE).
Living in areas with a lot of snow In the snow-laden areas, the Inuit are thought to have developed a form of snow goggles to protect them from photokeratitis, also known as snow blindness.

In the late 1700s James Ayscough, an English optician, proposed the addition of tint (primarily blue, green, and amber) to glasses to treat a variety of vision problems. In the end, Ayscough is often acknowledged as the inventor of sunglasses even though the lenses they invented were not designed to protect the eyes from the sun.
Crookes lenses were introduced in the 1900s. Sir William Crookes was a British chemist and physicist who invented a 100% ultraviolet-light-blocking blue sunglasses lens made from glass containing cerium. It would take another 29 years before the concept of wearing sunglasses while flying regularly scheduled takeoff.
In 1929, Sam Foster launched a manufacturing firm for plastics situated in Massachusetts and began to produce celluloid among other items. Then the first injection molding machine was created. This machine was able to produce mass-marketed sunglasses for the first time.
Foster was soon selling sunglasses under the name Foster Grant from a Woolworth store in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1937, 20 million glasses were reported to be sold in the U.S.
Since then, sunglasses have become a huge part of our everyday culture. At present our United States is home to the biggest market for sunglasses worldwide, which generated over $4.66 billion in revenue in 2018.

When were polarized sunglasses invented?
Edwin Land, who founded the Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, developed the first sunglasses with an oblique filter in 1929.
In 1935, he entered into negotiations with the American Optical Company to produce the first sunglasses with polarization.
Polarized lenses have a special filter that blocks the intense reflection of light, thus reducing glare and enhancing visual clarity. These lenses can be highly beneficial for all sporting activities as they can reduce glare from light reflecting off flat surfaces, such as water, sand or a flurry of snow.
